League Game Greetland v Shelf 28th March 2010

Greetland 3 v Shelf 3

After several postponments we finally got to play our local derby against Greetland Goldstars. Now after a poor game last week against Batley we really wanted to work as hard as we could against a very good side who are 2nd in the league at the moment and through to the Sheild Cup Final.

We arrived at Greetland and were met with some windy cold weather, and to be honest i thought I saw 2 polar bears at one point as we made our way to the field. We were warmly greeted by Allan and he kindly told us this was just a normal day up in Greetland (wow).

The game kicked off at 11am, now I only wished the Shelf girls could of done the same because the first 15 to 17 minutes of the game were dominated by greetland who played some very good football and punished our sleepy defence not once but 3 times (well played Greetland forwards).  Shelf were just not playing football what so ever and were lucky that it was not 5 goals to nil, but for a couple of good saves from Shannon in goal.

As your manager I could not believe what I was seeing especially after our team talk before the game, and at one point started to look for the 2 polar bears (as I could not find a cliffe to jump off). Anyway we made a couple of changes one after 20 minutes and another couple after 30 minutes, which to my relief saw Shelf not only start to play better football but also get on top of the game.  Indeed Francesca (after her very quiet game again against Batley) was on fire and was unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions.  Also Anna and Ebony were unlucky as the Greetland goalie kept the score at half Time Greetland 3 v Shelf 0.

The 2nd half started at the 1st ended and saw Shelf really nominate the game, however the good strong Greetland defence were not moving.  Cassie, Francesca, Ebony and Olivia in Midfield were getting to the ball 1st everytime and without going on played some great football linking really well with Anna as our sole striker. Greetland though were holding strong and though they were not in possesion much were unlucky not to score after a really great move that saw their striker hit the outside of the post. Then after 17 minutes of the 2nd Half Shelf scored an absolute beauty from Olivia who controlled the ball from the 18 yard line, saw the keeper was just off her line, and hit a great shot into the top right corner of the net (game on).

The rest of the 2nd half saw Shelf play good football and we scored a 2nd goal from Ebony, and once again it was another beauty (Sorry Ebs forgot to say it was so after the game) 3.2. Then with 3 minutes left Shelf won another corner which was very well received by Francesca who I can only say dragged the ball into the back of the net for a well deserved equalising goal. From the Kick off Shelf again attacked and were unlucky not to score the winner with only seconds remaining. Final Score Greetland 3 v Shelf 3

Manager Comments

As the saying goes Football is a funny old game.  Well done girls after our nightmare start we played some good passing football that without doubt was a pleasure to watch (indeed thank you to Allan the Greetland Manager who commented that we did just that after the game).  Unfortunatly Abi only played 17 minutes today and Lavinia (who was our best player last week) 30 minutes.  This was partly due to Greetland and the way they were playing, but also to the Shelf girls who were on the pitch turning the game on its head ( I know it was hard and cold, but hope you can understand, and that you are both massively important to our TEAM). Overall the game was an excellant advert for Girls Football, and Greetland are without doubt a very good side, and we wish Allan, Mark and their girls all the very best in their Shield Final against Sth Leeds City in May. We do though still need to work very hard at some aspects of our game, we know what they are so please lets make sure we are all at training on Tuesday.

We dedicate this game to Rebecca (our injured player who has been out for the last couple of months), thanks for coming to see us play today girl, I hope we made you proud (sorry we just could not get you that win). We all wish you a speedy recovery as we ALL miss you take care

Manager Player of the Game: Olivia Hastie (GOAL OF THE SEASON,which made it game on)

Away Manager Player of the Game : Francesca Wild (Caused Greetland problems from the 1st to the last minute of the game)
